The donghua team simplified the story by streamlining minor characters, merging Eccentric Scarletflame (Chihuo / 赤火老怪) with Bu Xu (often translated as Xu Bu or Daoist Bu Xu). Because they are the same person in the adaptation, their fates perfectly align with how they both die in the novel. [1, 3]
The Character Merger Explained
- In the Novel: Eccentric Scarletflame and Bu Xu were originally two distinct, unrelated late Core Formation cultivators. Scarletflame was known for his ruthless Water Sunflower Devilish Art. Bu Xu was an independent cultivator who practiced the Tranquil Yang True Fire Art and entered the Heavenvoid Hall alongside Han Li hoping to find a breakdown pill for the Nascent Soul bottleneck. - In the Donghua: In episode 104, the donghua explicitly reveals that the character introduced as Red Fire Monster/Scarletflame is actually Bu Xu. They merged them into a single character practicing fire arts to cut down on extraneous side plots. [1]
Their Matching Deaths
Because of this character merge, his death in the adaptation stays entirely faithful to how the original characters perish inside the Heavenvoid Hall.
During the trial inside the Inner Halls, he attempts to cross the Path of Molten Rock (or the Path of Life and Death). Despite his late Core Formation strength and powerful fire manipulation, the extreme restrictions and brutal environment of the Heavenvoid Hall overwhelm him. He ultimately fails the trial and dies the exact same way across both mediums—consumed and killed by the restriction traps of the ruins
