Dragon Cry (龙吟 Lóngyín之疾 zhījí), also known as Dragon’s Cry (龍泣 Lóngqì), is a congenital illness that afflicts the cultivator Xin Ruyin and, in the novel, her reincarnation Tian Qin.
The disease causes the meridians to gradually shift and displace as cultivation deepens. This leads to burning pain, weakness, and eventual withering of the meridians. If left untreated, it shortens lifespan drastically. It is considered incurable by medicine or elixirs. Even rare herbs such as the Millennium Golden Zoysia can only temporarily ease symptoms, not remove the root cause.
Known Effects
- Meridians gradually displaced by higher cultivation levels.
- Severe burning pain across meridians.
- Weakening of body and poor health from youth.
- Shortened lifespan, often less than two years once meridians begin to wither.
History
Xin Ruyin, a formation master from Yuanwu Country, was born with Dragon Cry and remained in poor health throughout her life. Her significant other, Qi Yunxiao, searched for rare spiritual herbs such as the Millennium Golden Zoysia in hopes of curing the disease. When Han Li later obtained a stalk of Millennium Golden Zoysia, he offered it to the couple. She refused, explaining that Dragon Cry could not be cured by medicine alone. Despite this, Han Li refined elixirs to ease her suffering and temporarily slow the degeneration of her meridians.
After Qi Yunxiao’s death by murder, Xin Ruyin’s condition worsened. She was told she had less than two years to live, and eventually succumbed during a confrontation with Fu Tianhua. Qi Yunxiao’s dedication to finding a cure, and Xin Ruyin’s persistence in the face of illness, are depicted as an example of loyalty and sacrifice in the donghua.
In the novel, Xin Ruyin’s reincarnation Tian Qin is also born with Dragon Cry, continuing the affliction across lifetimes, though she does not appear in the donghua.
